A journalist from Dublin decided to defy the social taboo of girls having unshaved armpits. Emer O’Toole didn’t shaved body hair for 18 months and proudly showed-off her unshaved armpits on TV.

Emer thought about doing this as she was examining her relationship with her body. The society finds it disgusting to have women with excessive body hair whether in armpits or on legs. She decided to make herself the main player in an experiment to challenge society’s notion of female beauty. She said she was uncomfortable at first because of the surprised looks from people around her but she got to the point where she just didn’t mind them. Emer will still shave her body hair at one point but she said she wants it to be out of choice and not something that she has to do for others.
