HALLOWEEN HISTORY 1

Halloween & Its Celtic Roots

Hi, I’m Ginny on behalf of Expert Village and I’d like to tell you a story. Come, travel back in time with me as we explore the brief History of Halloween. The history of Halloween goes back about 2500 years to 500 .C. and the ancient Celts who lived in the area that we now know of as Western Europe. We owe most of our modern day Halloween practices to the religious beliefs and traditions of these ancient people. The ancient Celts were people who worshiped beauty and nature. They had many gods but their two main gods were the object of ceremony and worship that shaped the basis of their culture and beliefs.

The Celts believed in a sun god without whom they could not live and Samhain, the lord of death, darkness and the cold dark winter. At the beginning of summer they had the feast of Beltran and at the end of summer the feast of Samhain. The Celts believed that Samhain called back the spirits of the dead on the night between summer and winter when the veils between the worlds of the living and the dead were the thinnest and the spirits could pass between them. Stay tuned for Chapter 2

Jack-o-Lanterns in Halloween History

Hi, I’m Ginny on behalf of Expert Village and I’d like to tell you a story. Come, travel back in time with me as we explore the brief History of Halloween. One of the biggest symbols of Halloween, the jack-o-lantern, is associated with Irish tradition. This comes from the Irish belief, along ago time, there was a rascal of a fellow named Jack who had the audacity to trick the very devil himself. It is said that Jack played a trick on the devil by enticing him up into a tree, then carving the sign of the cross in the tree so that the devil could not get down.

In exchange for removing the sign the devil had to promised not to come after Jack’s soul. Well, the devil kept his promise, but it did not prevent jack from eventually dying. Because Jack had been a stingy miserly drunkard in his life he was not admitted into heaven. Desperate for a place to rest his soul, Jack appealed to the devil to let him reside in Hell. But, because Jack had tricked the devil, the devil would not let Jack into Hell. Instead, Jack was condemned to run the earth forever, searching for an eternal resting place. The devil gave Jack a candle, which Jack put into the turnip he was eating. From that day on he has roamed the earth, with his lantern, looking for that place to rest. And, that is how we got the modern day Jack-O-Lantern. Stay tuned for The History of Halloween, Chapter 11

English Ghost Stories in Halloween History

Hi, I’m Ginny on behalf of Expert Village and I’d like to tell you a story. Come, travel back in time with me as we explore the brief History of Halloween. In the United States many different countries brought with them their traditions. The English influence saw family gathering together to have parties, dance, sing, eat apples and nuts, tell ghost stories, and try to tell each other’s fortunes. This grew out of the English holiday of Nut Crack or Snap Apple Night, as it is still called in parts of England.

The Irish brought with them many, many customs and trappings of Halloween that we have today. They hung to their Oidche Shamhna or Night of Samhain that came from the ancient Celt. They also discovered that pumpkins make much better jack-o-lantern and that scary faces could be carved in them to ward off the evil spirits. Scottish families kept alive the traditions of girls staying to play fortune telling games and pass out food while the boys roamed outside engaging in pranks. They would also go door to door begging for food and playing jokes or causing harmless chaos on those who didn’t go along with them. Many different countries had the traditions of boys or groups of people going on parades or door to door asking for food and favors. Stay tuned for The History of Halloween, Chapter 13

European Immigrants in Halloween History

Read the story in English and Vietnames

Hi, I’m Ginny on behalf of Expert Village and I’d like to tell you a story. Come, travel back in time with me as we explore the brief history of Halloween. As early as 370 AD gangs of boys roamed the fields and villages of Ireland, blowing horns, chanting in voices that were disguised and blackmailing the local farmers who cheerfully gave up bread and money to these boys. These are kinds of traditions that people brought with them when they moved from one country to another. Early American Halloween traditions were influenced by the influx of European immigrants over the years. By the early 1800’s millions and millions of people from Europe had come to the U.S., particular people from Ireland. The great potato famine in Ireland forced millions of Irish to leave behind their beloved homeland in search of food. Many people were starving and they had no choice but to leave. Most of them manage to cross the ocean and come, eventually, to America. These Irish settlers brought with them their traditions, beliefs, and customs where they were mingled together, here in the U.S., with local customs as well as those brought by other recent immigrants from England and other European nations. What we have today is a result of many of these different customs that came to us from Europe. And, stay tuned for the history of Halloween.
