Steve Flaherty Vietnam War Letters: U.S. Soldier's Letters Finally Reach Home

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Vietnam Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh exchanged long-held artifacts Monday collected during the Vietnam war — including letters written by a U.S. soldier who was killed. Instead, the letters written by Army Sgt. Steve Flaherty of Columbia, S.C., were used by the North Vietnamese for propaganda. Here are some excerpts of Flaherty's letters:

Letter to "Betty"

"I'm sorry for not writing so long but we have been in a fierce fight with N.V.A. We took in lots of casualties and death. It has been trying days for me and my men. We dragged more bodies of dead and wounded than I can ever want to forget."

"Thank you for your sweet card. It made my miserable day a much better one but I don't think I will ever forget the bloody fight we are having."

"RPG rockets and machine guns really tore my rucksack."

"I felt bullets going past me. I have never been so scared in my life. Well I better close for now before we go in again to take that hill."

Letter to "Mother"

"I definitely will take R&R, I don't care where so long as I get a rest, which I need so badly, soon. I'll let you know exact date."

"If Dad calls, tell him I got too close to being dead but I'm O.K. I was real lucky. I'll write again soon."

"Our platoon started off with 35 men but winded up with 19 men when it was over. We lost platoon leader and whole squad."

"The NVA soldiers fought until they died and one even booby trapped himself and when we approached him, he blew himself up and took two of our men with him."

Letter to "Mrs. Wyatt"

"Our platoon leader was killed and I was the temporary platoon leader until we got the replacement. Nothing seems to go well for us but we'll take that ridge line."

"This is a dirty and cruel war but I'm sure people will understand the purpose of this war even though many of us might not agree."

The Daily Mail reports, some consider the capsules medicinal. We want to warn you: The details are disturbing. "The grim trade is being run from China where corrupt medical staff are said to be tipping off medical companies when babies are aborted or delivered still-born." Medicinal microwaves reportedly dry the corpses — after which they're reportedly pummeled into powder and then put in capsules. They're often labeled by smugglers as "stamina boosters" — but the Associated Press reports some believe the capsules cure a wide range of diseases. Al Jazeera reports Korean customs has promised to amp up its efforts to combat the smuggling. "There have been 35 cases of people either trying to bring the capsules in to airports into South Korea or sending them via post from various areas in China." Part of the crackdown, according to Al Jazeera, is a special focus on particular airports authorities believe are more popular among traffickers. But South Korea's Dong-A Ilbo reports... "To dodge the crackdown, smugglers have mixed the capsules with vegetable extract to make it impossible to discern the color and smell of the capsules, or open packages and replace the contents of ordinary pharmaceutical products with the capsules in a process dubbed 'box switching.'" Amazingly, no one has been arrested yet. People caught smuggling the pills said they had no idea what was in them, and officials say the amounts have been so small they were meant for personal use, not resale. But the BBC quotes a health official saying these cure-alls could be poison. "It was confirmed those capsules contain materials harmful to the human body, such as super bacteria. We need to take tougher measures to protect public health..." Though Geekosystem adds, "If you're wondering, no sicknesses have been reported from ingesting the powdered human flesh pills, but one wonders if a person who dabbles in the illegal dead baby pills would admit to said dabbling..."

Scientists say they’ve figured out a mysterious ailment that’s plagued most of us since our first slushie — brain freeze. HLN has more.
“Well now scientists say they know what causes it. They say brain freeze happens when a lot more blood flows through a certain artery that’s behind your eyes.”
The research wasn’t just to solve the mystery of what causes brain freeze. There’s a more serious application — the researchers hope to gain insight into migraines, which affect more than 30 million Americans. LiveScience explains.
“Previous studies have found that migraine sufferers are actually more likely to get brain freeze than people who don't get migraines. Because of this, the researchers thought the two might share some kind of common mechanism or cause, so they decided to use brain freeze to study migraines.”
As common as migraines are, it’s actually tough to study them directly. Researchers can wait until a subject has a migraine then bring them to the lab, or they can induce a migraine with drugs. An American Physiological Society press release says both of those methods have a downside.
“Pharmacological agents can induce other effects that can make research results misleading …  and since researchers can’t wait for migraine sufferers to experience a migraine in the lab, those studies miss the crucial period of headache formation that occurs sometimes hours before scientists were able to study these patients.”
So researchers decided to use brain freeze as a stand-in. They had subjects drink cold water through a straw aimed at the roofs of their mouths, monitoring blood flow in their heads the whole time. They saw a main artery flood the brain with blood as the brain freeze set in.
A Washington Post blogger explains what that might mean.
“...in response to the sensation of severe cold, the body floods the brain with warm blood to keep that vital organ operating. But because the brain is stuck inside an inflexible skull, the flood of blood might increase pressure, which likely hurts.”
The researchers say that same artery could play a role in other headaches, and drugs that constrict arteries might alleviate migraines. But not everyone is convinced. ABC spoke to other specialists who say more research is needed.
“...experts not involved in the study argued that the majority of headaches are not caused by alterations in blood flow. Migraine, for example, is widely considered to be a brain disorder, not a blood vessel disorder. While the study may be a great model for ice cream headaches … it's too big a leap to tie the findings to other types of headaches.”
So the research may or may not help treat migraines, but at least the next time you get an ice cream headache, remember — it’s just your body protecting your brain. That’s some comfort, right?

Vanished in the middle of the night. That’s what the family of missing first grader Isabel Celis says about her disappearance from the family home over the weekend.
Fox News has details on the search.
“Well, over the weekend, more than 150 law enforcement agents including the FBI using the dogs that you’ve seen there in the video and also helicopters are searching for Isabel and they’ll be out again this morning...”
Police continue to focus the search on the family home, looking for evidence of a break in. The police chief told CNN, they found a possible entry point.
“We have a window that was open and a screen removed. We’re labelling it as suspicious circumstances and a possible abduction, mainly so that we keep all possibilities open.”
But police still aren’t ready to consider Isabel’s disappearance a crime.
They questioned registered sex offenders in the area, but police tell ABC News, they don’t want to limit the investigation.
“Is this a kidnapping case?”
“We’re just not prepared to say this is a kidnapping or abduction at this point because there’s a lot of investigating to be done.”
The case was initially classified as a missing persons case. It was thought Isabel might have wandered off on her own and gotten lost.
But as the extensive search continues, authorities say that’s less and less likely. CBS reports the family fears the worst.
“The family fears Isabel may have been abducted in the same manner as Elizabeth Smart. She was 14 when she was snatched from her bedroom in the middle of the night. Smart was found alive nine months later.”
The community is supporting the family, putting up fliers and posters to help with the search. More than 200 people attended a candlelight vigil for Isabel Sunday night in a nearby parking lot.

Violent rhetoric between North and South Korea is a regular feature of political life on the Korean peninsula. But the latest threat by North Korea to turn parts of the South to ashes has even long-time Korea watchers taken aback. The BBC has more.
“…the statement carried by the state news agency gave a detailed information about an attack it said it would soon carry out… it has North Korean soldiers shouting the word ‘kill’ and attacking effigies of the South Korean president.”
The statement targets South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak and the some members of the media in the South. According to ABC News, the statement said the military attack will use...
“...‘unprecedented peculiar means and methods[‘]...[and] all will be reduced to ashes in three to four minutes...[involving] ‘form of fire’.”
Analysts in Seoul have mixed reactions towards the threat, but the Voice of America suggests the threat should not be taken lightly, noting the newscaster made the announcement by...
“...interrupting regular programming on North Korea’s central television station early Monday afternoon, forcefully [reading] an unusual announcement from a unit of the army’s supreme command.”
CNN says the threat could be due to the South Korean military’s announcement of a cruise missile capable of striking any site in North Korean territory.
The Christian Science Monitor says the threat comes at a time when the U.S. and South Korean forces are concerned about the stability of the North Korean leadership.
“One overriding question...is how to assess the role of the country’s new leader Kim Jong-un, how much power he really wields over his generals and how he’s likely to want to lead North Korea.”
Analysts tell the New York Times, the North’s threat might be recently appointed Premier Kim Jong-Un’s attempt to solidify power, including...
“...a military provocation as part of its effort to establish Mr. Kim’s authority at home and boost his negotiating leverage with the United States...”
The threat increases tension between the North and South, but according to Thestar.com, a South Korean Defense Ministry official says no special military movement had been observed in the North.

Long Island, New York mom Debbie Stevens is angry and taking action against her former boss.  This all comes after she says she gave up her kidney more than a year ago to help her boss Jackie Brucia; she was then fired by Brucia shortly afterward. 
The New York Post says here’s how it all began...
“While Stevens was a close health match for Brucia, she wasn’t a perfect one. So the doctors agreed to allow Stevens to donate her left kidney to someone else in the transplant group so that Brucia could move up the waiting list and get her organ from someone else.”
That’s when the trouble began for Debbie Stevens who was working for the Atlantic Automotive Group.
“She says that after the surgery she skipped out on work for a bit because she wasn’t feeling well. Well, her boss says that is not allowed--and gave her the boot!”
Buzz: 60 says Stevens claims her boss was pressuring her to get back to work before she was ready, but that’s not all.
“Before Stevens was let go, she claims Brucia would parade her in front of coworkers, took away her overtime and transferred her to another dealership 50 miles from her house.”
Stevens is asking the state of New York for help. The Daily Mail reports...
“Stevens has now filed a legal complaint at the Human Rights Commission in New York claiming that the woman used her and then fired her ... Stevens' lawyer, Lenard Leeds, said he will file a discrimination suit against the company and would seek millions of dollars in compensation.”
And while kidney recipient Jackie Brucia hasn’t had much to say publicly about the situation, she did speak to WINS about it. 
“I will always be very grateful that she gave me a kidney. I have nothing bad to say about her.’”
Stevens told WCBS this whole experience has ruined her life.
“Part of me was taken away I cry alot. She broke your heart. She did break my heart.  Stevens says she sometimes wishes she could get her kidney back. I was used.”

Today's top story... another act of defiance by North Koreas communist regime. A new threat of a possible satellite and missile launch have been announced. It comes despite a strong warning from the U.S. against taking these kinds of measures.

STORY:
North Korea said Tuesday it was preparing a satellite launch, which analysts say may actually be a test of it longest-range missile.

Hiking tensions on the Korean peninsula and spooking Seoul financial markets, the announcement by Pyongyang's KCNA news agency came despite a U.S. warning against provocative moves.

If successful, North Korea would have a missile with a maximum range of 6,700 km, or 4,200 miles, which could be seen as a direct security threat to the U.S.

In the last few weeks, North Korea has said it has the right to develop a peaceful space program, using a multi-stage rocket.

It last tested such a rocket in 2006, when it flew for a few seconds and then blew apart.

Pyongyang has a history of similar brinkmanship at times of heightened regional diplomacy, and the news came as Japan's Prime Minister Taro Aso prepared for a U.S. summit with President Barack Obama.

The North has separately threatened to attack South Korea, warning that war is imminent, although analysts do not believe the impoverished nation would risk a larger conflict.

The two sides agreed to advance the dialogue mechanism and carry out a number of joint exercises. Despite both sides hailing Mullen's visit as an important step towards improving China-US military ties, they were unable to reach consensus on a number of issues of mutual concern. Among the topics on the agenda, the South China Sea dispute between the two nations has featured prominently in the talks in Beijing. The two military heads held talks on a wide range of security issues. The predominant topic was the US involvement in the South China Sea. One Chinese teenager’s Apple fever quickly escalated to kidney failure. The 17-year-old reportedly sacrificed his kidney so he could afford an iPhone and an iPad last April. Atlanta’s WAGA has the details.

“Five people in China are facing charges after a teen sold his kidney so he could buy some electronic gadgets. Those arrested include the surgeon, and those who arranged the operation.”

Officials say the boy approached a broker in an online chat room with his offer. The broker offered the teen $3,500 for the exchange. But Gawker puts that amount in perspective.

“The broker received $35,000 for the transplant, gave the student $3,500 and shared the remaining money with the other defendants and several medical staff involved in the operation. Surely the kid who gives up one of his organs deserves more than one-tenth of the profits, right?”

The operation didn’t stay under wraps for long. When the teen came home with new Apple products and fresh scars, his mom called the police. He came clean about the dirty deed, but now struggles with kidney failure. A writer for WebProNews tried to make light of the serious situation, saying Apple could use this incident to its advantage.

JOSH WOLFORD: “I guess this is one way Apple could advertise their popular product – “The iPad 2: so awesome, you’ll sell your organs on the black market for one!”

According to Al Jazeera, Apple products are hugely popular in China, but priced beyond the reach of many Chinese people. The Hindu reports it’s not uncommon for students to go to great lengths to acquire the gadgets.

“Soon after Wang's case, the Shanghai Daily reported that many students in southern Guangdong “had decided to donate sperm in order to raise money to buy iPads and iPhone.”

According to Xinhua, there are also 1.5 million people in need of kidney transplants, but only around 10,000 are performed annually, leading to a thriving illegal market for organs. But as Wired points out, this practice only recently became illegal.

“The human organs trade has been banned in China since 2007 — so if this deal had been conducted five years ago, this wouldn’t have been a crime at all.”

Officials continue to investigate other potential suspects, but the whereabouts of the teen’s kidney remain unknown.

Is dancing -- proving to be dangerous? “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Melissa Gilbert was rushed to the hospital after her performance Monday night.

“Apparently this is the move that did that. Former “Little House on the Prairie” star apparently hit her head and then she was feeling dizzy.”

Gilbert later tweeted...

“I'm alright. Mild concussion and whiplash. Very soon I will be safely home resting and being taken care of.”

Gilbert had already been dealing with back injuries from earlier in the season, which some believe may have contributed to the concussion.

And The New York Daily News reports Gilbert isn’t the only one suffering this season.

“Injuries on "Dancing With the Stars" are a common fact of life. So far this season, Menounos has already suffered from two broken ribs and stress fractures on her feet. The "Extra" TV host hopped on partner Derek Hough's back for a piggyback ride off the stage after their performance.”

Panelists told ABC’s Good Morning America it’s just that time in the season.

“But this is the point in the competition when injuries start to happen because it’s incredibly physically demanding. Every week you never have a day off. You’re dancing like crazy.”

And Gilbert isn’t the only one getting attention for the injury incident.

“Your boy carried her out, apparently. Your rocker guy. Gavin. Carried her down and Maks brought her to the hospital. Gotta like that team stuff.”

How chivalrous. Pop star Gavin DeGraw said anyone would’ve done the same thing. Even though he didn’t know exactly what he was getting into.

“It was further than I thought. I wasn’t sure how far it was but it dawned on me how far it was when my arms wouldn’t work anymore. Then I was like, “aw man!”

It hasn’t been confirmed if Gilbert will participate in the elimination show.

What’s the worst part of flying? If you said stripping off your socks, shoes, belt and accessories, chances are, you’re not alone. But one woman took “stripping” to a whole new level Tuesday morning. Barely able to keep it together, anchors for ABC’s World News Now explain what went down at the Denver International Airport.

“This woman was smoking in an area you’re not supposed to smoke in. And so the guy says, ‘Oh, can you put your cigarette out?’ And she says, ‘You know what, I’m just going to get naked right here at the airport. I’m not going to put out my cigarette.’ At 9:00 in the morning, took off all her clothes, and then asked an airport staffer, ‘If you could please re-print my boarding pass.’”

For a cool $3,000, TMZ managed to snag an exclusive photo of the unclothed woman. It published it to the website under the headline “TSA Meets T&A” – and called the incident bizarre.

Denver’s KDVR spoke to one passenger who describes the scene at the airport – saying other travelers didn’t really have time to laugh at the incident – they were more shocked than anything else.

“No one really noticed her at first because people were trying to get on their planes. And then about two minutes later, everybody realized she was buck naked...He says the woman’s behavior had parents running to cover their children’s eyes. Some, just stared.”

A writer for the sop.com has a different take on the incident – saying what attracted attention first was likely not the naked woman.

“In this day and age when smoking is even banned in some public parks, it's a greater breach of etiquette for a woman to smoke in a non-smoking area than it is for her to strip in the middle of an airport concourse. Folks probably noticed that she was smoking in a non-smoking, before they realized she was stark naked. If you are going to be a rebel and break the rules, you might as well break them all.”

So what happened after the woman stripped down to her birthday suit? A blogger for West Word explains authorities weren’t so much concerned for safety...but the woman’s mental state.

“[The woman] was taken to Denver Health for a mental health evaluation. Meanwhile, Fox31 reporter Justin Joseph reveals that there's a video of the incident, for which TMZ is apparently thinking about shelling out $10,000. Eat your heart out, Khloe and Beyonce.”

Authorities say the woman will not be arrested or face charges.

A former high school volleyball coach and current Fresno, California teacher is charged with having sex with one of her students.
Here’s Fresno’s KFSN.
“Megan Denman’s face was covered as she walked out of the Fresno County Jail Tuesday evening. The Fresno Police Department says the 29-year-old teacher was booked on one count of sex with a minor and two counts involving sexual acts.”
A writer for The Daily Mail says Denman is a newlywed, married some 18 months ago.
One of Denman’s former students describes her experience in the classroom to a reporter from Fresno’s KGPE.
“She was nice. I mean, she was nice to all the students. I don’t know. I didn’t think she would do that.
... She had her favorites, like, they were seniors and they all hung around at her desk. We didn’t really do work in the class.”
A reporter for Fresno’s KSEE says the Megan Denman case is the latest in a string of similar cases in the area.
“In the last 10 months, there have been at least five investigations into inappropriate relationships between students and teachers in the Central Valley.”
The New York Daily News has a statement from Fresno schools superintendent Michael Hanson.
“Unfortunately, we have learned of an alleged inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student ...Words cannot describe my deep disappointment in this alleged breach of teacher-student relationship. ”
Denman is out on bail and on administrative leave from her job. According to an article from The Fresno Bee — police say the inappropriate relationship was with one student, and they have no evidence of other victim.

A small group of uninhabited islands off the Northwestern Philippines is the site of a tense standoff between China and the Philippines over territorial claims. Fox News reports.
“The Chinese ships ordered the Philippine warship to leave Scarborough, claiming Chinese sovereignty over the rich fishing ground. But the warship has stayed put, arguing it is Philippine territory.”
But this dispute is about far more than fishing territory says NTDV.
“The South China Sea is believed to have large oil and gas deposits. China, Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims on sections of the sea.”
Stratfor publishes daily intelligence briefings for Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. It says tensions in the area have been on the rise for some time.
“Vietnam and the Philippines in particular have been more aggressive at offering new areas for forcing investment and expanding production in existing areas. This has drawn the attention and ire of China."
So far the standoff has remained peaceful but state run China Daily contained a veiled warning to its neighbours.
“Beijing's restraint should not be misconstrued, it does not lack the means and resources to act more boldly in defense of its territorial integrity."
Global Nation quotes Gregorio Honasan, a Philippine senator who believes the United States should intervene, citing the Mutual Defense Treaty between the two countries.
“Why is the US ominously silent this time,” Honasan said ... We have a problem in Scarborough, how will you help us? Will you help us? Otherwise, what is the treaty for?”
