Quang Ngai – “In South China Sea—East Sea as referred by the Vietnamese–China is unable to present historical evidence of its claim. Its territory was historically limited to Hainan island, thus Chinese used force to illegally occupy rocks, features and islands in the Paracel and Spratly archipelagos”. With these remarks, Prof. Pham Dang Phuoc, Rector of Pham Van Dong University, closed the workshop ‘Sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly Archipelagos: Historical and Legal Aspects’ held in Quang Ngai at the end of April. An appeal for greater strategic trust. This was the aim of Vietnamese prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung's speech on Friday at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual regional security forum in Singapore. More specifically, Vietnam's prime minister called for unity among Southeast Asian countries, especially in this historical moment when China is asserting its claims in the South China Sea, or East Sea, as it was referred to by Dung during his remarks translated from Vietnamese.
